International Women’s day is held on 8th March to celebrate and honor the achievements of women worldwide.
The day has been celebrated in March every year,
since the early 1900s
in order to shed light on women’s rights, praise their contributions to society and uplift the upcoming generation to acknowledge the struggles that women have faced throughout history and are still facing today.
Here at Ulike, we acknowledge and celebrate women from all over the world, as
Gloria Steinem
, an American Journalist, world-famous feminist, and activist puts it,
“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”
We actively participate in making a positive difference for women of all sizes, shapes, and colors, and equally, acknowledge the efforts of women at the front and center of all the hustle, while also celebrating the women at home, raising their families to be good citizens in today’s society.
So, if like us, you would like to celebrate International Women’s day and contribute towards their empowerment, here are a few ideas that you can try out to help make a positive difference this year,
1. Show Your Support to Women You Admire – Start at Home
It is likely that you admire certain women that you do not appreciate often due to a busy life. That is why women’s day is here. It gives you a chance to show love and support to the women who are a positive influence in your life.
As charity begins at home, start your women’s day celebrations by celebrating the existence of your family women. Express the regards you have for them whether it is your mother, wife, sister, or daughter. You can send them a heart-touching message, upload a memorable social media post, get them thoughtful gifts, or arrange a surprise dinner for them.
Appreciation makes women know their importance. They feel cherished and supported. Consequently, they realize their full potential and it makes them want to do more for you as well as the community.
2. Read Up on Women’s History – Update Your Reading List
Reading women-based books to know more about women’s day and enlighten yourself about women’s contribution to society is a great way to celebrate women’s day comfortably in your space.
If you are someone who loves to read, this could be your favorite way to commemorate women’s day. A number of amazing books have been written by women authors that highlight women’s rights, history, psychology, and struggles.
Some of the inspiring books to add to your read-list are Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough, A River of Stars by Vanessa Hua, The Women’s Suffrage Movement, Back Talk by Danielle Lazarin, Warcross by Marie Lu, The Radium Girls by Kate Moore, and Hidden Figures.
3. Reward, Recognize, and Empower Women – At Your Workplace
Women at your workplace play an essential role in the team. So, March 8 is the time to recognize their efforts, hard work, and place in your team. Then comes rewarding them. Moreover, you can take steps to empower the women of your workplace, stop discrimination, and help them rise.
Arrange a small surprise event for them by decorating your workspace or holding an award ceremony where you present them with letters of appreciation, women’s day cards, chocolate, or bonuses. Some of the interesting titles you can give your female colleagues include the best mentor, rising rookie, women of the year, and more.
Furthermore, forming women empowerment programs and girls’ support groups, and raising funds for such programs can make a huge difference.
4. Share Women’s Achievements in History – Get on Social Media
The modern era is the time of social media. Social media is the platform to celebrate international women’s day on a large scale. There must be one or more women in your industry who inspired you. Thus, share their achievements on social media to inspire more people.
Additionally, if you have read a women’s history book, write a post about it on your social account; if you have visited an art gallery with paintings of female artists, show the world those masterpieces; if you have been to a fashion show, let others know; and if you know a woman who fought for women’s rights, gender equality, and humanitarian cause, make sure to upload a message about that.
Lastly, you can plan history lessons or blog posts to help more people know about women’s achievements in history and present-day life.
5. Donate and Fundraise for Women’s Charities – Help Underprivileged Women
Underprivileged women are often neglected when these are the women who need your support the most. So, dedicate this day to such women to help them in their struggles and improve their quality of life.
Look for the organizations that work for this cause. NGOs that work for female education, emotional support, reproductive health, social rights, domestic violence, and gender equality are worth your donations.
Some of the charities working on the international level are CARE, Girls Inc, The Malala Fund, Girls Who Code, Women for Women International, and National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
6. Dedicate time to Volunteer – Support Local Women’s Organizations
If you are someone who loves going out, meeting new people, discussing ideas, and sharing your experience, volunteering at local women’s organizations can be your way to celebrate women’s day. Additionally, call your friends and ask if they are interested in guiding young women to a long yet fruitful path.
There must be many programs in your vicinity looking for people to hold a career counseling session, mentorship program, or motivational talk time. In addition to guiding girls with your words and emotions, you can do more for them by treating them to a healthy lunch.
Moreover, donating unused and unwanted items like a dress that is not the right fit for you, mismatched makeup shades, and jewelry can be a cherry on top. Lastly, do not forget to start a campaign for raising funds.
7. Support Women-Owned Businesses – Give Back to the Community
Many women were fired from their jobs during the pandemic. And several of them started a business to support themselves and their families. Support small women-owned businesses.
Yes, you can get that Gucci bag, Channel accessories, and Levi’s jeans to fit in society. But buying stuff from small businesses and supporting them is the way to give back to the community. There are several women-owned clothing brands, restaurants, salons, and handmade jewelry shops.
Leave a positive review on their site, send a thank-you message to the owner, and make a suggestion, if any. Moreover, you can promote such startups on your social media accounts so more people find out about the hidden but high-quality and affordable stuff. As a result, more people helping such businesses thrive.
8. Last but Not Least, Celebrate You – With Some Much-Needed Self-Care
While taking care of other women, do not forget yourself because you are equally delicate, strong, and important. Take aside a few hours for yourself when you are making your women’s day schedule and choose what you want to do during that time.
Women come in all shapes, sizes, and mindsets. So, their self-care is equally versatile. It can range from sleeping soundly or blasting at a party. Do whatever pleases you the most during your me-time.
You can do skincare, try a new makeup look, treat yourself to a delicious meal, meet someone you love, watch your favorite season with popcorn, work out, or meet your girls for some gossip.
Moreover, healthcare freaks are free to join a yoga class, meditation session, and deep breathing exercises to help their mental health. Because all you want is relaxation at the end of the day.
The Bottomline…
Women inspire us with all they have been through and continue to inspire us with the challenges they face and overcome. Whether it is in their workplace, society, or even at home, women bravely tackle the obstacles that are in the way toward equality, their basic rights fulfillment, and much more.
It is our duty as individuals, and collectively, as organizations to support women in their challenges and create a better future, for women all over the world.
